We Met Online

Although I’m a proponent of social media, I don’t believe that communicating online replaces real world interaction. That’s why it was nice to finally meet Dan York in person last weekend. It underscores the value of face-to-face conversation over mere bits and bytes.

Of course, we met online and ended up arranging to meet online. So technology certainly has its value.

The circumstances of our meeting after 5 or 6 years of online interaction as a result of our engagement with the For Immediate Release podcast hosted by Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson are unusual. Dan happened to post that he was going to be running in a scenic half marathon in southwestern New Hampshire that winds through 4 covered bridges. Since I was going to run 10+ miles for fun that day anyway, I decided to make the hour plus drive for a nice Labor Day Weekend run. (Side note: I still need to meet Neville in person. I wonder what interesting circumstances will enable that!)

Oh, and the race? I’m pleased to say that Dan and I both set new personal bests for the half marathon distance. A good day all around.
